Executive Board

Pablo Roa – Managing Editor-in-Chief

Pablo Roa is a junior at the University of Maryland, College Park, pursuing a dual-degree in broadcast journalism and government and politics. Along with his work for Stories Beneath the Shell, Pablo is a crew chief for Capital News Service’s live news show, Maryland Newsline. Pablo currently represents the Philip Merrill College of Journalism in the University Senate, and he’s the vice president of UMD’s chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. This semester, Pablo is working in U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s office as a digital strategy intern. Previously, Pablo has interned for the Democratic National Committee, U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, and the U.S. Department of Labor. You can find his work and resume at

Katie Bemb – Assistant Managing Editor

Katie Bemb is a junior journalism major and Public Leadership Scholar with a minors in international development and conflict management and German. In spring 2016, she interned for the School of Public Policy to help plan Climate Action 2016, a multi-stakeholder conference discussing implementation of the Paris Agreement. She has written and edited for a number of campus publications, including The Diamondback, Stories Beneath the Shell, Pulsefeedz, Her Campus and Unwind Magazine. She works for College Park Scholars managing communications and also for University Relations assisting the University of Maryland’s development officers. She hopes to utilize her communication skills to enact social change through domestic policy and global human rights development. After achieving her bachelor’s degree in journalism, she hopes to obtain a job at a university in the Washington, D.C. area where she can explore both her passion for human rights development and her interest in higher education.

Lynsey Jeffery – Senior News Editor

Lynsey Jeffery is a sophomore broadcast journalism major and Spanish minor in the Honors Humanities program at the University of Maryland. Previously, she interned for PBS39 in Bethlehem, PA. Lynsey also serves as the Region 2 Student Assistant Director and University of Maryland Outreach Chair for the Society of Professional Journalists. On campus, she works behind the scenes at the University TV station, CNS Maryland, and is a former contributor to the university radio station’s satirical broadcast.

Julia Heimlich – Senior Features Editor

Julia Heimlich is a junior broadcast journalism and criminology and criminal justice double major. Aside from previously holding a staff writer  position for Stories Beneath the Shell, Julia has written for several on-campus publications including The Diamondback and PulseFeedz, and currently serves as secretary for University of Maryland’s chapter Society of Professional Journalists. Broadcast-wise, she volunteers behind the scenes with the university’s student news organization, Capital News Service, and this semester she’s especially looking forward to focusing on the investigative side of journalism.

Alex Mann – Senior Sports Editor

Alex Mann, 24, is a senior multi-platform journalism major at the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism. As a reporter for the Capital News Service, Mann covers the opioid crisis and environment. On campus, he’s a managing editor at Beltway Bulletin and the senior sports editor for Stories Beneath the Shell. Over the summer of 2017 he interned for The Capital, a Baltimore Sun Media Group newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland. A year prior, he spent the summer living in Lima, Peru where he worked for an english publication. Born in Washington D.C., Mann spent the better part of his life in Anne Arundel County, where he spends much of his time outdoors and on the water. After graduating Mann hopes to work for a newspaper covering public health and the environment.

Brad Billington – Multimedia Editor

Brad Billington is a senior broadcast journalism major with a concentration in film studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. He grew up in New Jersey and has interned for New York’s WCBS-TV station for two years as a writer and a production assistant. He has a passion for storytelling, and hopes to become an entertainment producer.

Lauren Anikis is a sophomore broadcast journalism major at the University of Maryland. She is primarily a photographer but is also involved in production. In addition to Stories Beneath the Shell she is helping to start a production company at the University of Maryland, Merrill Made Productions, does photography and production for The Left Bench and production for Capital News Service.


Maryam ShahzadSenior Copy Editor

Maryam is a freshman broadcast journalism major. Maryam is the senior copy editor of Stories Beneath the Shell.  She has interned for Congressman John Delaney’s Congressional Campaign, and is pursuing an academic concentration in government and politics.

Maya Koeppen Co-Social Media Manager

Maya Koeppen is a freshman journalism major on the multiplatform track at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is from Olney, Maryland and has interned for the  Montgomery County Sentinel this past summer. After college, she hopes to pursue a career doing features writing and/or photography for an online publication.
